Wien, Braumüller, 1849.
8vo. Bound with the original printed wrappers in a recent card-board binding. Ex-libris pasted on to verso of front board. Wrappers browned and internally with occassional marginal brownspotting. 52 pp.
The very rare first edition, posthumously published, of a series of three lectures given by Bernard Bolzano in 1816 at the University of Prague. Here Bolzano steps into the sociopolitical arena addressing the relationship between the Czech and German populations in Bohemia (then part of the Habsburg Empire).
Remarkably progressive, Bolzano’s call for tolerance and his opposition to nationalist exclusivism was ahead of his time especially considering the later ethnic tensions in the region.
