Christian Thomasius (1655–1728) was a German philosopher and jurist often regarded as one of the most important figures of the early German Enlightenment. Thomasius played a significant role in advocating for a separation between theology and law arguing that legal matters should be based on reason rather than religious doctrine. He taught at the University of Leipzig and later at the University of Halle, where he became the first professor of natural law and the rector of the university.
