The rare first edition of Svane’s funeral sermon for Danish King Christian IV. Christian IV (1577–1648) was one of the most notable kings of Denmark and Norway, ruling from 1588 to 1648. He is remembered for his energetic leadership, ambitious architectural projects and involvement in the Thirty Years' War. Christian IV died on February 28, 1648, at Rosenborg Castle in Copenhagen. He died from illness, likely resulting from old age and the toll of his injuries. His death ended one of the longest reigns in European history (nearly 60 years). Christian IV is buried in the Roskilde Cathedral, located in Roskilde, Denmark, the burial site for Danish monarchs since the Middle Ages. Hans Svane (1606–1668), a Danish statesman and churchman, was born in Horsens on March 27, 1606. He studied Oriental languages in Copenhagen and abroad in Franeker, Wittenberg, Oxford and Paris. Upon returning, he became a professor of Oriental languages at Copenhagen University and later pursued theology, becoming a doctor of theology in 1646. “In 1655, Svane succeeded Jesper Brochmand as bishop of Sjaelland and adhered to strict Lutheran orthodoxy. At the rigsdag of 1660, he played a pivotal role in transforming Denmark's elective monarchy into a hereditary monarchy, aligning with Frederick III's absolutist agenda. His proposal for equal rights and a free hand for the king was instrumental in these changes. Svane became Denmark's only archbishop, a royal councilor, and held various prestigious positions. However, his overreach caused conflicts, particularly with the university faculty, requiring royal intervention. Despite his political focus, he proposed reforms for church governance, education, and poor relief. Svane died on July 26, 1668, leaving a complex legacy as a staunch royalist and church reformer.” Encyclopedia Britannica. Biblioteca Danica III, 128.
