RAVATON, HUGO (HUGUES). - A FUNDAMENTAL WORK ON MILITARY SURGERY.

Strassburg, Johann Gottfried Bauer, 1767. Contemp. hcalf. A nick to upper compartment with loss of some leather. Raised bands, titlelabel with gilt lettering. Spine a bit rubbed. (8) IX-XLVIII,642,(14) pp. and 7 folded engraved plates. Internally clean and fine.


Extremely scarce German edition, translated from the French manuscript to the second French edition which is much enlarged in relation to the work which was published in 1750 as "Traité des playes d'armes à feu....". The work was only published in French a year later (1768) with the title "Chirurgie d'armée, ou traité des plaies d'armes à feu, et d'armes blanches...et une infinité d'autres détails neufs & intéressants.".

"One of the most importent works on military surgery during the 18th century. Ravaton, a skillfull army surgeon, was the first to employ a tin boot, suspended on four rings, for the "hanging" position of broken bones. He was also the first to to adopt the double-flap method in amputations". (Garrison & Morton No 2154, but here listed the French edition from 1768).
