4to. (26,5x22 cm.). Bound in 2 cont. hcalf, not uniform. Backs somewhat worn and rubbed. (Textvolumes 1-3 bound in one and plates bound separately in one volume). (1),191,(1);(1),123,(1);(1),120 pp. and 206 (of 308) engraved plates (F. Guimpel fec.), all in fine hand-colouring and numb. 1-296. Some quires of text browned in vol. 1 and 2., 2 plates strenghtened in outher margin. Some offsettings to plates. A calligraphed title has been made to the platevolume, but there was never issued a separate title to the plates as they were supposed to be bound with the text.
Scarce first edition of this beautifully illustrated pharmacological botanical work. F. Guibel (1744-1839) was an industrious member of the Berlin school who was put on the map as a botanical illustrator by K.L. Willdenow (he engraved the plates for Willdenow's famous Hortus Berolinensis 1803-16). - "Seine Figuren sind echt biedermeierlich eng und nüchtern, doch von liebvoller Sorgfalt und grosser Genauigkeit, vor allem in den Blütenzergliederungen."
