FIRST PUBLICATION OF THE MEALY MACHINE

MEALY, GEORGE H.

A Method for Synthesizing Sequential Circuits.

New York, American Telephone and Telegraph Company, 1955. 8vo. Original full green cloth. Volume XXXIV, 1955 of "The Bell System Technical Journal". Library stamp to front free end-paper and title page. Minor bumping to extremities. A nice and clean copy. Pp. 1045-1079. [Entire volume: 13, (3), 1330 pp.].

First publication of the highly influential Mealy machine: a finite-state machine whose output values are determined both by its current state and by the values of its inputs.

Mealy machines are useful to describe how an output is associated with the transition. A full-adder changes state to reflect the carry-in and outputs the sum as the transition takes place. Vending machines can be set up as Mealy machines.
